Sleep, Stress and Benzodiazepines: A Practical Guide
Anxiety and insomnia form a loop. Poor sleep raises next-day reactivity, and a reactive nervous system makes falling asleep harder. Breaking the loop at either point tends to improve both.
Diazepam can shorten the time it takes to fall asleep, but it is not a long-term sleep medicine. Used nightly for weeks, it can reduce deep and REM sleep and lead to tolerance, so most prescribers use it briefly while other measures take hold.
Practical steps that compound quickly: a fixed wake time seven days a week, bright light within an hour of waking, no caffeine after noon, a cool and dark bedroom, and a wind-down hour without screens or news.
If you have been using a sedative nightly for more than a few weeks, do not stop abruptly. Ask your prescriber about a taper, and expect a few nights of rebound wakefulness that settle as your own sleep drive returns.
